Emerson KL4210X1-BA1 Intrinsically Safe CHARM Baseplate for DeltaV Systems
The Emerson KL4210X1-BA1 intrinsically safe (I.S.) CHARM baseplate is the foundation for deploying DeltaV I/O modules in Zone 0, Zone 1, and Division 1 hazardous locations. Certified to ATEX, IECEx, and FM standards, this baseplate provides galvanic isolation and energy-limiting circuits that prevent ignition sources in explosive atmospheres—critical for oil & gas, chemical processing, and pharmaceutical manufacturing environments where flammable gases or vapors are present.
Intrinsic Safety Architecture
Unlike conventional I/O baseplates, the KL4210X1-BA1 incorporates barrier technology that restricts electrical energy to levels incapable of igniting hazardous atmospheres. Each field circuit is individually isolated and current-limited, ensuring compliance with IEC 60079-11 intrinsic safety standards. This design eliminates the need for external safety barriers, reducing installation complexity and panel space requirements in classified areas.
Core Technical Capabilities
- Dual Power Distribution: +6.3 VDC CHARM bus power at 7.6 A for I/O module logic; +24 VDC field power at 8.4 A for sensor/actuator circuits
- ATEX/IECEx Certification: II 1G Ex ia IIC T4 Ga (Zone 0), II 1D Ex ia IIIC T135°C Da (dust environments)—suitable for the most stringent hazardous area classifications
- Wide Temperature Range: -40°C to +70°C ambient operation for Arctic installations, desert climates, and outdoor enclosures
- Ruggedized Construction: Withstands 10g shock (½-sine wave, 11 ms) and 0.7g vibration (13.2–150 Hz)—ideal for offshore platforms and mobile equipment
- No Calibration Required: Factory-configured and tested; plug-and-play integration with DeltaV CHARM I/O modules
Deployment Scenarios
Offshore Oil & Gas Platforms: Deploy analog input CHARMs for pressure transmitters and temperature sensors in Zone 1 process areas without purged enclosures.
Chemical Reactor Monitoring: Interface intrinsically safe pH probes, conductivity sensors, and level transmitters directly to DeltaV controllers in Class I Division 1 locations.
Pharmaceutical Clean Rooms: Connect I.S.-certified load cells and flow meters in solvent handling areas where explosive vapor concentrations may occur during normal operations.
Grain Handling Facilities: Monitor dust-prone environments (Zone 20/21) with intrinsically safe discrete inputs for bin level switches and conveyor interlocks.

Installation & Safety Requirements
Critical: The KL4210X1-BA1 does NOT support hot-swap operations. Installation and removal must occur only when system power is de-energized and proper lockout/tagout procedures are followed. Refer to Emerson documentation 12P6523 (IS-CHARM Subsystem) and 12P6122/12P6123 (Control Drawings) for wiring diagrams, grounding requirements, and entity parameters.
All field wiring must use certified I.S. cable with blue insulation per IEC 60079-14. Cable capacitance and inductance must not exceed values specified in the system control drawing to maintain intrinsic safety integrity. Grounding follows single-point earth reference to prevent ground loops that could compromise safety barriers.
System Integration
The KL4210X1-BA1 mounts on DeltaV 8-wide I/O carriers and accepts any CHARM I/O module (analog input, discrete input, analog output, discrete output). The baseplate auto-detects installed modules and configures power distribution accordingly. DeltaV Explorer software provides real-time diagnostics including power consumption, module status, and intrinsic safety loop integrity.
Maintenance & Serviceability
No user-serviceable components—do not disassemble. The baseplate contains precision safety barriers and calibrated current-limiting circuits that must not be altered. Replacement units ship factory-tested with certification documentation. No field calibration is required; simply mount, connect, and commission via DeltaV software.
Why Choose KL4210X1-BA1?
Compared to traditional Zener barrier panels, the KL4210X1-BA1 reduces installation costs by 30–50% through distributed architecture—barriers are integrated at the I/O level rather than centralized in control rooms. This approach minimizes wiring runs, simplifies loop drawings, and accelerates commissioning. Emerson's global certification portfolio ensures compliance across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Middle East jurisdictions.
