Partnership Launches Automation Innovation Lab at UND

Border States teamed up with UND's College of Engineering & Mines. They partnered with ECN Automation as well. The three groups launched a new Automation Innovation Lab. This joint effort boosts student knowledge. It increases workplace readiness in automation products. The lab equips students for a vital workforce segment. This is crucial for North Dakota and beyond.

Addressing a Regional Skills Gap

The project started with a regional manufacturing council. Kevin Rusk, Director of Business Development at UND, shared this. The council asked how the university could help manufacturers. The top pain point involved automation skills. Manufacturers needed locally trained engineers. These experts could repair and optimize automation systems. They also needed talent to automate equipment further.

The university addressed this engineer shortage. It partnered with Border States and ECN. The partners brought in essential equipment. Students now gain crucial hands-on experience.

Providing Practical Automation Experience

The lab offers students a unique opportunity. Arturo Freydig, CEO of ECN Automation, stated the goal. The simple goal was creating a practical, hands-on lab. This setup complements their classroom education. It builds early connections to the automation world. This directly prepares students for successful careers.

Ahmad Khosti, Sales Director from Border States, called the lab a starting point. They actively work on bringing in more products. This helps students learn and grow continually. Students will progress from system setup to troubleshooting. They will learn to fix products effectively. Dr. Ryan Adams, Dean of the College of Engineering & Mines, agreed. The lab allows students to gain necessary skills. They will step into the workforce ready to contribute. They will ultimately be ready to lead, he added.

The Lab Is Now Open

The new lab opened for the fall 2025 semester. Leaders celebrated its grand opening recently. Attendees included university, ECN, and Border States leaders. The local business community also participated. This collaboration fuels future automation talent.
