ABB Powers Azerbaijan's Green Energy Shift

ABB just secured a major electrification contract. bp, operator of the Sangachal terminal, selected ABB. This project supports the facility’s electric power transition. It also strengthens grid stability. The contract falls under a five-year global framework agreement. This agreement, signed in September 2024, modernizes a vital oil and gas hub. The Sangachal terminal spans over 688 hectares.

Electrifying the Sangachal Terminal

ABB will supply and integrate four synchronous condensers. These custom-designed units replace existing gas turbines. This move supports Azerbaijan’s cleaner energy push. It also enhances the site’s grid connection. Furthermore, ABB Ability™ System 800xA® will be included. This Distributed Control System allows real-time monitoring. It also improves operational efficiency and reliability.

Optimized Solution for Grid Stability

ABB’s tailored solution optimizes the design. It reduces the number of required synchronous condensers. This approach also lowers overall costs. These systems are critical for grid stability. They provide inertia, short-circuit power, and reactive power. This is vital as Azerbaijan expands its renewable energy. The country aims for 30% renewable electricity by 2030. They also target a 40% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Renewable energy grew from 6% to 8% between 2022 and 2023.

Full Lifecycle Project Support

ABB’s scope covers the entire project lifecycle. This includes system studies and design. It also covers equipment installation and commissioning. The 24-month execution began in February 2025. The Sangachal terminal is 55 kilometers south of Baku. It processes 1.2 million barrels of oil daily. It also handles 81 million standard cubic meters of gas daily.

Driving Sustainable Industrial Operations

Per Erik Holsten leads ABB’s Energy Industries division. He expressed pride in supporting bp. ABB’s solutions reduce the terminal’s carbon footprint. He noted ABB solutions make operations leaner. They also make them more energy-efficient and resilient. ABB operates globally in over 100 countries. It boasts a 140-year legacy. Its Process Automation division employs 20,000 specialists. ABB drives the transition to cleaner industrial operations.
